Role Summary

In line with this commitment, the Resident Medical Officer plays a central role in providing efficient, high-quality clinical care across both outpatient and inpatient services, ensuring accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and continuity of patient care. The role requires active participation in on-call services, with timely and effective response to medical consultations and emergencies to ensure uninterrupted service delivery and patient safety. As a performance-driven position, the Resident Medical Officer is accountable for patient volumes, clinical outcomes, responsiveness, documentation accuracy, and strict adherence to established hospital protocols and standards.
Key Responsibilities
A. Clinical Care & Patient Management
- Conduct outpatient consultations and provide appropriate diagnosis and treatment
- Manage inpatients through daily ward rounds and review treatment plans based on clinical findings
- Handle medical emergencies, stabilize patients, and refer cases appropriately for specialized care
- Perform surgical procedures within scope of competence and provide pre- and post-operative care
- Demonstrate experience in basic surgical procedures and surgical patient management
B. Clinical Documentation & Records Management
- Maintain accurate and complete patient records
- Ensure timely documentation of consultations, diagnoses, and treatments
- Prepare discharge summaries and clinical reports
- Ensure all patient interactions are traceable and audit-ready
C. Emergency Response & On-Call Services
- Respond to medical emergencies within the facility
- Provide timely on-call support for clinical consultations
- Ensure continuity of care during shifts and after-hours
- Collaborate with nursing and clinical teams in emergency management
D. Clinical Coordination & Team Support
- Work closely with nurses, lab, and pharmacy to ensure coordinated care
- Provide clinical guidance to junior staff where required
- Participate in case discussions and clinical reviews
- Ensure proper handover of patients during shift transitions
E. Compliance & Professional Standards
- Adhere to hospital protocols, clinical guidelines, and regulatory standards
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information
- Ensure ethical medical practice at all times
- Comply with licensing and professional requirements
F. Operational Support & Continuity
- Support hospital operations including medical camps and special clinics
- Ensure availability during assigned service periods
- Maintain accountability for patient care within assigned coverage
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from a recognized institution
- Valid registration and current practicing license from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) as well as a valid Indemnity.
- Minimum of 1–2 years’ experience in a busy hospital setting
- Experience in both outpatient and inpatient care is required
