Job Description

We are seeking to recruit an experienced, results-driven and highly competent Principal Associate to join a dynamic legal practice in Nairobi.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality legal services and expertise on complex and routine assignments, develop domain expertise, and effectively handle client assignments from start to finish with minimal supervision.

The role will have a particular focus on Capital Markets, Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A), Commercial & Corporate Law, and Property & Conveyancing.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
• Managing a portfolio of transactions and other legal assignments with minimal supervision, ensuring assignments are completed accurately, professionally and within required timelines.
• Providing sound legal advice and undertaking thorough legal research, including drafting and reviewing legal documents and furnishing sound legal opinions, particularly in Capital Markets, M&A, Commercial & Corporate Law, and Property & Conveyancing.
• Supervising, supporting and developing junior lawyers, including providing feedback, guidance and appropriate oversight to ensure that legal work is performed to the required standards.
• Working collaboratively with other lawyers and team members to ensure effective delivery of client assignments and achievement of the Firm’s objectives.
• Effectively managing legal and other projects, ensuring deadlines are met, stakeholders are kept informed and high-quality legal services are delivered to clients.
• Managing and developing client relationships, including properly preparing for client meetings and ensuring quality client service on assignments handled.
• Participating in business development activities, including client meetings, networking events and development of the Principal Associate’s professional profile and network.
• Properly scoping services, quoting fees and delivering the target billables set by the Firm, while ensuring efficient utilisation of time and resources.
• Maintaining and building professional and technical knowledge and contributing to the Firm’s learning objectives, training and development of checklists, templates and improved working practices.
• Ensuring assignments are handled in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, professional and ethical standards, Firm procedures and standard documents.
• Undertaking other responsibilities that reasonably fall within the scope of the Principal Associate role and job description.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from a recognised university.
• Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
• Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
• Valid Practising Certificate.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ post-admission experience in legal practice.
• Substantial practical experience in Capital Markets, M&A, Commercial & Corporate Law and/or Property & Conveyancing.
• Company Secretarial qualification will be an added advantage.
