The School of Architecture & Planning (SoAP) has for over a century been home to many internationally respected academics and has produced graduates who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of architecture and planning in South Africa and around the world. The school has an academic staff of approximately 40 people and a student body in professional and other degrees of over 600. It is one of four architectural and planning programmes in the African continent that are ranked among the top 200 programmes in the world. The University of Witwatersrand is aspiring to be among the top teaching and research-intensive universities in the world.

The School of Architecture and Planning (SoAP) invites applications for a 50% FTE at Lecturer level to teach in the Planning Programme. SoAP offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in urban and regional planning and development planning, accredited by the South African Council for Town and Regional Planners (SACPLAN). The Programme also offers several fields in Urban Studies.

The post is primarily to teach planning theory, comparative planning systems and basic economic/local economic development, but ability to teach in additional areas is encouraged as outlined in criteria below. As a lecturer, one is expected to conduct research, provide service to the University and wider community, undertake school administration in addition to academic teaching and supervision responsibilities as well as contributing to an environment that develops critical thinking abilities in students.

Requirements

  • Be able to teach planning theory, comparative planning systems and development economics/basic economics/local economic development
  • Having experience in one or more of the following areas will be an advantage: municipal governance; urban management and land use planning and management
  • Undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching experience
  • Capacity to supervise research reports at the tertiary level, preferably should have a record of research supervision at honours and masters level
  • Evidence of organisational and/or leadership skills: experience of mentoring students and transformation in institutions of higher learning will be an advantage
  • Good ICT skills especially the ability to navigate the terrain of online learning and blended learning
  • Evidence of course or programme coordination at a university is preferred

Qualifications

  • A SACPLAN recognised degree in Urban/Town/City and Regional Planning/Development Planning
  • A Masters degree in the field of Urban Planning or related field
  • Eligibility for registration with the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) is a requirement
