Job Description
About the Organization
Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust is a non-profit organization operating in Rarieda Sub-County, Siaya County, Kenya. The organization is dedicated to strengthening rural communities by supporting children, youth, and families to unlock their potential and drive sustainable development from within.
Our vision is a community where people believe in their abilities and work together to create lasting social and economic progress. Our mission focuses on empowering local communities by building capacity and encouraging initiatives that improve livelihoods, especially for children and young people.
We are guided by strong core values that shape everything we do. We promote environmentally and economically sustainable development to ensure long-term well-being. We value creativity and innovation as tools for continuous learning and adaptation. We embrace participatory development approaches that place communities at the center of their own growth. We are committed to human rights, dignity, diversity, and mutual respect. Transparency, accountability, and integrity remain central to our operations.
Our Background
Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust began as a grassroots community initiative founded by Michele Ostertag together with Monica and Solomon Ochieng. Initially focused on addressing urgent needs such as healthcare and education, the founders quickly realized that deeper socio-economic challenges required a broader approach.
In 2003, the initiative was formally registered as the Lusi Community Orphans Project, supporting vulnerable children through self-help programs such as poultry farming, dairy production, beekeeping, and craft work. The income generated helped sustain orphaned children with basic needs and school support.
As the program expanded, it became clear that a stronger institutional framework was needed. In 2006, the initiative was officially restructured into Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust, establishing a more professional and sustainable organization that continues to operate today.
