We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Accounting & Tax Intern to join our Finance team in Nairobi. This role offers hands-on exposure to accounting operations, tax compliance, financial reporting, and project reporting support within a dynamic business environment. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced professionals to develop practical skills in line with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) regulations, IFRS standards, and local statutory requirements — including supporting project managers with budget tracking and financial reporting across active projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Accounting & Bookkeeping
- Assist in recording and maintaining accurate financial transactions in the general ledger
- Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Assist with payroll processing and related journal entries
- Maintain proper documentation and filing of financial records and invoices
- Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Assist in preparation and filing of tax returns including VAT, PAYE, Corporate Tax, and Withholding Tax via KRA's iTax portal
- Support monthly VAT reconciliation and ensure timely submission to KRA
- Help prepare transfer pricing documentation and other statutory schedules
- Monitor tax deadlines and assist in tracking tax compliance obligations
- Conduct research on current and proposed tax legislation affecting the business
- Financial Analysis & Reporting
- Support preparation of management accounts and variance analyses
- Assist in budgeting and forecasting processes
- Compile financial data and prepare reports for internal stakeholders
- Help with year-end audit preparation and liaise with external auditors as needed
- Project Reporting Support
- Assist in tracking and reporting financial performance of ongoing projects against approved budgets and milestones
- Support preparation of project cost reports, budget utilisation summaries, and expenditure forecasts for project managers and senior leadership
- Compile and reconcile project-related invoices, purchase orders, and disbursements to ensure accurate cost allocation
- Assist in monitoring project funding schedules and flagging variances or risks to the Finance Manager
- Contribute to preparation of donor or grant financial reports where applicable, ensuring compliance with reporting templates and deadlines
- Maintain organised records of project financial documentation to support internal reviews and external audits
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field from a recognized Kenyan or international institution
- Experience with tax filing and compliance
- CPA (K) Part II or above is an added advantage — students actively pursuing CPA are encouraged to apply
- Knowledge of accounting software and journal entry preparation in quickbooks ,ZOHO
- Strong understanding of finance principles and analytical skills
- Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently
